display a fist full of cash,

and raise a hooking brow.

beware, oh fair children of the mid-day.

Dear Rebecca & Elizabeth,

I could say that I came out of this music smoking,

But there was no black symbol,

And I’m still feedin’ the fire.

I could say that I saw my favorite ol’ time sisters,

dancin’ and strummin’ to beautiful rules.

But their river-y faces are always lamenting,

And I’m further away from their lives of service,

than I’ve every been before.

Who remembers them?

But I would be lying.

dear Carolina Dance Inc.,

i would like to send forth sincere congratulations on your invention because SHAG defied social conventions as carefree caucasian teenagers were inspired by the possibilities inherent within improvisational african-american dance and music.

DEFINITION:

SHAG: is a game of seduction, romance, collaboration, and improvisation. It happens when two people hold one or both hands, move together out of basic step accompanied by some ensemble improvisation and back to the basic in time with the music.

LEWIS HALL, during the winter of 1927, weary of the foxtrot and waltz, began to give some thought and time to a new dance geared to a different tempo and steps. With the assistant of a close friend, he worked out a pattern of intricate steps danced to a double time beat to be called “The Shag”.

This was introduced to the young dancers at the Feats of the Pirates Festival in Wilmington, NC, of August 1928.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SHAG:

dearest discovering the dirt on your fat face,

dear Harvey(s) & Black-ie(s),

my backyard friends and challengers,

people are making claims towards the scent of the sea...

somehow i feel guilty,

in belief that my skin is discharging salt like a sailor.

sail on...so on...and sew on...

i'm sewing today (VIOLIN F HOLES - where the sound gets larger).

there are chops, sideburns, to be worn in fancy measure,

accompanied by folks and and folk tradition.
